One of our HBXL Skills Bootcamps could be for you – if you’re unemployed, self-employed, employed but ready for a career change, or want to learn new skills within the business you run or the business you work for (talk to your employer!). And if not you – may be someone you know? Check it out.
What you need to know
How much does it cost?
Skills Bootcamps are funded by the Department for Education (DfE) so they, in conjunction with the regions they’re working with, set the parameters. The courses are free if you’re self-employed or a sole trader/owner of a small business that doesn’t have a payroll. Alternatively they’re 90% funded if you’re an SME Limited company with a payroll – you pay just 10%. Larger companies with 250+ employees pay 30%. Each course has its own cost.
Am I eligible?
First you need to meet the government’s requirements for becoming a Skills Bootcamp learner. There is an application process, and places are limited to give each trainee the necessary 1-2-1 time.
- Are you 19+?
- Have you been resident in the UK for 3 years?
- Do you reside in one of the geographic regions supported and funded? The courses are delivered remotely online but trainees must either live or be working on construction projects in funded locations – in other words – local authorities in England who have allocated funding to our courses.
- Can you confirm that you are not in any Government funded Further Education or Apprenticeship scheme? (It’s OK to be self-funded however)?
- Can you confirm that you haven’t attended another Skills Bootcamp within the last 12 months?
- Do you have construction experience? It’s preferred but not essential.
Which regions is funding available for?
Our Skills Bootcamps are available in regions that provide funding. To qualify you need to either live in the region or be working on a construction project in that region. See which regions are currently funded here.
Is it right for me?
We’ll have a call with you to check you can realistically commit to attending each session and find time for the homework.
- Do you have a positive mindset and a real interest in learning new things?
- Are you happy to undertake a short online Maths and English assessment to check if you require any additional support on the course?
How is it delivered?
One of the many benefits of our Skills Bootcamps, is the fact that they’re delivered remotely, online. So we’re not physically sitting together in a classroom, we’re all at home or work, or any suitable, quiet place with a good internet connection. We live-stream the lessons, and record them as well. Everyone has their cameras on, and we all interact. So an excellent learning opportunity – without the travel! The tutor hosts the session via the Go To Webinar Platform. The software required for the course (Estimating, CAD or Health & Safety depending on the course) will be provided free of charge throughout the course so you can complete your work.
What will I need for the HBXL Skills Bootcamp?
- Windows laptop/computer (for software package installation) – if you have an Apple Mac computer you will need Parallels.
- Broadband access
- Video access i.e. Microsoft Teams/Zoom for training and meetings with course tutor.
