Meet Claire Pascoe – one of the wonderful graduates from a previous HBXL CAD for Construction Skills Bootcamp. After 17 years in a construction-adjacent job, Claire decided it was time for a new challenge. And what a journey she’s had since taking the plunge…
Why Claire took the leap
“I loved what I did,” says Claire, “but I could see that if I didn’t make a change soon, it would only get harder.” She left her Design Engineering job to explore new directions, giving herself the space to see what might come next. That’s when she spotted the HBXL Skills Bootcamp on Facebook.
She had always been fascinated by how people use their homes and imagined herself acting as a bridge between homeowners and builders—helping people visualise their extensions and ask the right questions. The HBXL CAD for Construction Skills Bootcamp looked like a great way to start.
Building new skills – and confidence
Claire already had a design portfolio, but it lacked technical construction drawings. Through the Skills Bootcamp, she learned to use HBXL’s PlansXpress software, giving her the ability to produce clear, professional plans and 3D visuals—skills that made her stand out.
In fact, it was her newly improved portfolio that caught the attention of a company providing life changing design solutions for people with complex care needs, including hoisting systems, accessible kitchens and hydrotherapy pools.
A perfect fit
Claire now works part time, both at home and in the office. “The course gave me the confidence to know I could learn something new,” she says. “It’s not just CAD – it’s the whole construction knowledge that’s been so valuable. The course also introduced RIBA stages and BIM which have proved beneficial in my new role.”
She’s not using HBXL’s CAD software in her current job, but the foundations laid during the course helped her to quickly adapt to the tools that her new employer used. Her advice to others? “Give it your all. Take the time to build a strong portfolio – it really opens doors.”
